Read the model-specific requirements with each answer before choosing parts.
Use household needle system 130/705H.
The manual recommends sizes 70 or 75 for lightweight fabric, 80 or 90 for medium fabric, and 100 or 110 for heavy fabric.
Insert the needle fully upward with the flat side facing back, then tighten the holder screw.
Use plastic Class 15 bobbins.
Insert an evenly wound bobbin so its thread is wound counterclockwise.
Route through the winding guides/pretension and bobbin hole, push the winder right, and use the pedal. Stop after a few rotations to trim the end, continue winding, then release the pedal. Return the winder left to sewing mode before removal/cutting; sewing is not possible while winding mode is engaged.
With threading prepared, hold the upper thread with the left hand and turn the handwheel counterclockwise through a complete needle cycle until the take-up is highest. Pull the upper thread to bring the bobbin loop through, then take both ends about 10 cm (4 in) back under the foot.
Switch off and unplug before changing the presser foot. The sole snaps onto a separate holder. Position the sole’s pin under the holder’s notch and lower the foot until they engage. Use the rear lever to release the sole.
Switch off and unplug before removing or refitting the holder. The holder is removable and attaches to the presser bar with its own screw.
Presser-foot pressure is adjustable with its dial.
The manual’s presser-foot overview lists zigzag, zipper, sliding buttonhole, blindstitch, overlock, concealed-zipper, darning/embroidery, button-sew-on, hemmer, open transparent embroidery, sliding-sole zigzag and edgestitch feet.
Clockwise increases foot pressure and counterclockwise reduces it. The manual warns not to reduce pressure below 0 because fabric will not feed.
Zigzag foot serves practical/decorative stitches and hems; zipper foot sews zippers; buttonhole foot with slide makes buttonholes with or without filler cord; blindstitch foot makes blind hems; overlock foot makes overlock-type stitches/edge finishing; concealed-zipper foot sews concealed zippers. The second table adds darning/embroidery for darning, embroidery and freehand quilting; button-sew-on for 2 or 4 holes; hemmer for double-turned hems; open transparent embroidery for appliqué/decorative/buttonhole stitches; sliding-sole zigzag for difficult-to-feed leather/plastic/vinyl; edgestitch for edges, parallel hems, lace or braid.
Press the black knob before lowering the foot to keep it level at a thick start. At a hump, stop needle-down, raise the foot, hold it horizontal with the knob and lower it. The foot returns automatically after a few stitches. Height plates can be placed behind the needle to level the sole.
Raise the foot, remove its sole and holder, attach the guard to the holder screw, refit the holder and sole, then check the guard is parallel to the sole and adjust its screw if needed.
For the left zipper side attach the right pin of the zipper foot; for the right side attach its left pin. Stop with the needle down and raise the foot when moving the slider. Use straight stitch and center needle.
Use straight stitch A, width 0 and center needle. The right zipper spiral is guided through the right foot groove and the left spiral through the left groove; the lower seam is completed after changing to the zigzag foot.
The manual offers narrow edge work using the zigzag, blindstitch or edgestitch foot and task-specific needle positions. For parallel seams, set the seam guide to the required distance and guide along an existing seam; stitch-plate markings use the center needle as reference.
Use straight A, width 0 and the hemmer. Double-fold about 3 mm over the first 5 cm, sew 4–5 stitches, stop and raise needle/foot, then pull the fabric back 10–15 cm without cutting the thread to help feed the fold into the hemmer.
Choose the blind stitch for firm fabrics or elastic blind stitch for stretch material. Finish/fold the edge and adjust width while turning the handwheel so the needle only just catches the fold. Set the foot guide against the fold.
Specifications apply to the named model and document edition. Read any setup, fabric or safety requirements with the answer.
Use zigzag B with the zigzag or button-sew-on foot and lowered feed. Turn the handwheel to check the needle enters the holes and adjust width to their spacing; sew about 10 stitches. For a thread shank leave about 10 cm tails, wrap under the button and secure on the wrong side. The source says sew the front two holes first for a four-hole button.
The single-step buttonhole program uses a button in the sliding foot to set length, allowing for the button’s diameter and thickness. The manual gives a maximum buttonhole length of 3 cm (1 3/16 in).
Use mercerized yarn or fine crochet thread as filler on stretch/coat fabrics. Hook the cord behind the foot and tie its ends temporarily in front, sew over it, draw the loop into the bartack and secure ends on the wrong side. Before cutting, place a pin at each end directly under the locking stitch to protect those stitches from the seam ripper.
The fast switch setting is rated at up to 1,100 stitches per minute; the slow setting is up to 650 stitches per minute.
Stitch width is adjustable from 0 to 6 mm. Black stitch patterns allow 0 to 4 mm stitch length.
The machine has a free arm for tubular projects such as cuffs, trouser hems and sleeve ends.
The feed dog can be lowered with the lever and raises again when the first stitch is sewn after moving the lever right.
Press the pedal gently to start, press farther for more speed, and release it to stop. The ACADEMY main switch has quick and slow positions, marked with a rabbit and snail. The manual lists up to 1,100 stitches per minute in the quick position and 650 in the slow position.
Raise the needle fully before turning the pattern selector. Select black patterns with the length dial between 0 and 4, red patterns with S1 and gray patterns with S2; align the chosen category beneath the dot. Each A–L category can contain up to three patterns.
The manual says red and gray pattern lengths are predefined and cannot be changed. Black patterns use their length range; buttonholes use the buttonhole-symbol range. Raise the needle fully before turning the width dial.
Base upper tension is 4. A higher dial value increases tension; lower decreases it. For the manual’sstraight-stitch check, visible bobbin thread on the right side calls for lower upper tension; visible upper thread on the wrong side calls for higher upper tension.
After selecting a stretch stitch or buttonhole and length, use a coin in the balance dial. Clockwise increases left buttonhole-bead/stretch-stitch density; counterclockwise reduces it.
Hold the quick reverse lever down while pressing the pedal for reverse sewing; release it to sew forward. The seam-securing chapter uses reverse sewing at the beginning and end of a seam.
The manual describes faggoting/open joins with a 4 mm gap and temporary backing. Its shell-edge section has a Vari-Overlock heading but instructs stitch category H; the practical table calls D Vari-Overlock and H shell edging. Keep those exact occurrences separate.
Switch OFF and disconnect before cleaning near the needle/hook or removing covers. The feed-dog-cleaning sequence removes foot/needle, lowers feed and removes the plate for brushing; it refits plate/cover, raises feed and refits needle/foot before reconnecting power.
Place the spool so thread unwinds clockwise, use the correct spool cap, then route through the guide, pretension, take-up lever and guides above the needle.
Remove thread remnants under the stitch plate and clean the feed dog with the brush.
Clean the bobbin case and shuttle race with the brush.
For frequent use, oil the needle-bar movement every six months with one drop at the marked mechanisms, turn the handwheel and wipe away excess.
The technical table lists two separate electrical versions: 120 V, 0.7 A; and 230/240 V, 90 W. It lists protection class II. These alternatives do not mean an individual machine accepts the whole 120–240 V range.
The safety page specifies the supplied foot control type KD-2902/KD-1902. Use the supplied power cable; the USA/Canada NEMA1-15 limit is 150 volt-to-ground. For another country, obtain a suitable cable from a bernette dealer. The USA/Canada plug is polarized: reverse it if necessary, contact an electrician if it still does not fit, and do not modify it.
Use the documented blanket-type D/S2 pattern and zigzag or open embroidery foot, temporarily hold the appliqué, and pivot with the needle down at the outer edge.
The quilting section explicitly requires an optional quilting plate and free-motion foot, recommends the extension table and secured quilt layers, sets stitch length 0 and secures the free-motion foot to the presser-foot bar with its screw. Fabric motion and pedal speed are coordinated by the operator.
The patchwork section uses straight A,center needle, length 1–3 and zigzag or patchwork foot. It describes 5 mm seam allowance or the foot guide, pressing seams open, and centered decorative stitching over joined seams.
Stop with the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot, use the needle as pivot, turn the fabric, lower the foot and continue.
Straight stitch uses category A and width 0. The chapter recommends 3–4 mm length for denim and 2–2.5 mm for fine fabrics; thread-gimp work uses 3–4 mm.
The manual covers triple straight A/S1, triple zigzag B/S1, super-stretch L for highly elastic seams and stitched zigzag C for finishing/reinforcement or elastic tape.
Remove the foot holder and secure the darning/embroidery foot with its lever on the needle-clamp screw. Select straight A, length 0 and lower the feed dog. The manual specifies a darning hoop and slide-on extension table, and describes moving the fabric by hand across the worn area.
For finishing edges, use the relevant zigzag/overlock-type stitch with the foot edge guide following the fabric edge. The chapter distinguishes vari-overlock and double-overlock stitch uses, including elastic fabrics.
The basting recipe uses straight stitch A, width 0 and length 4, with fine darning thread. Its introductory recommendation is 3.5–4 mm. Pin the layers at right angles to the basting direction.
For gathering use straight A, width 0, length 4, center needle and upper tension no higher than 2. Sew parallel rows 5 mm apart with long tails, pull bobbin threads and distribute the gathers. Smocking uses a selected decorative stitch over gathered fabric, then removes the basting.
The table labels width×depth×height 416 × 174 × 299 mm and weight 7.0 kg.
Choose a cap leaving no gap to the spool. The spool net is used only on the horizontal holder; secure it against slipping off. The second pin and felt disc support bobbin winding or multiple-needle threading.
Prepare with the machine OFF and needle/foot raised. Lower the foot for the threader; lightly lower its lever and take thread around the guide, lower and hold the lever fully, guide thread in front of the needle under the wire hook, then raise the lever with thread loose and pull the resulting loop through.
The troubleshooting tables cover rethreading/tension, correct needle choice/insertion/condition and suitable thread for uneven stitches, skips or breaks. Damaged hook tip or stitch plate is referred to the dealer.
The fault table checks power connection/switch and foot lowering. For unfavorable room temperature it says to place the machine in a warm room one hour before use. For thread caught in the hook it describes removing upper thread and bobbin case, turning the handwheel backwards and forwards by hand and removing thread remnants.

Service-manual availability and service-only procedures remain unestablished unless separately cataloged and reviewed.
These answers use the model-specific English April 2026 instruction manual and its safety requirements. Some source instructions have unresolved wording or step order, noted with the answer. Standard shank type, hook classification, exact bobbin dimensions, broader substitutions and third-party fit remain unconfirmed. A document review is not hands-on testing.
An unanswered question does not mean a part is incompatible. We have not confirmed enough information to recommend it.
